One barista, one machine, one small stretch of counter is the reality the Expobar Zircon 1 Group Plus is designed around. With the grinder and bean hopper built into the same chassis, it removes the need for a separate unit alongside and frees up space that a smaller site simply does not have to give.
The busiest hour, not the daily total
Despite the single group, output here is genuinely commercial: sites needing up to around 50 coffees an hour sit well within its range. An hourly figure is more useful than a daily one on a machine like this, because a single group is limited by how fast one person can work rather than by the boiler, and around 50 coffees an hour is a serious pace for one operator who is also taking money and handing over food. The practical question is whether your demand arrives in a manageable stream or all at once. A deli that sells coffee steadily from eight until three will find this comfortable; a site that empties a school bus into the shop at half past eight will want two groups and two people. Working out your busiest hour rather than your daily total is the honest way to test that before you buy.
Temperature, pressure and repeatability
A heat exchanger boiler keeps brew water at a stable temperature while steam is drawn for milk, so quality holds up during a rush rather than drifting. Programmable volumetric controls repeat the same shot volume automatically, the pressure gauge lets the operator see what the machine is doing at a glance, and the steam wand carries enough pressure to build proper microfoam for flat whites and cappuccinos. Underneath it all is robust stainless steel commercial construction rather than a scaled-up domestic build, covered by a two-year warranty when the machine is bought new.
The grinder in the chassis
Building the grinder into the machine is the whole point of this model and its main trade-off. You gain counter space, a shorter workflow and one less thing to plug in, since beans, dose and extraction all happen within one arm’s reach of the operator. What you give up is the flexibility of swapping grinders independently or running two beans side by side, so a site that wants a separate decaf hopper should factor that in. For most single-operator counters it is a good bargain, because the space saved is space you can actually use and the dose sits directly beside the group where the operator’s hand already is.
Water, waste, power and noise
It is compact, but it is still a plumbed commercial machine. Confirm the incoming water, the waste run and the electrical supply the model calls for before the counter is finalised, and leave clearance above for the hopper to be filled without lifting it out. Think about noise as well as space, because a built-in grinder sits closer to the customer than a floor-standing one; on a small counter that is worth positioning deliberately rather than by default.
Running it single-handed
Delicatessens, sandwich shops, farm shops, office receptions, salons, showrooms and small bars all suit this format, especially where one person covers both the till and the coffee, or where a separate grinder simply will not fit. Volumetric dosing does the repeatability for you, so training concentrates on grind adjustment, tamping and milk rather than on shot consistency.
Keeping it clean
Use a water filter to keep limescale out of the boiler, clean the group head, portafilter and steam wand daily, backflush regularly with a proper detergent, and keep the hopper and grinder chamber free of stale oils. Periodic professional servicing will keep seals and gaskets in good order and the machine running reliably through its working life.
Sizing up or down
Choose a two-group machine if two people will ever work the bar together, or if large takeaway cups and milk drinks dominate your orders at peak, and look at the two- and three-group options in the traditional espresso machine range for that. Choose an automatic machine instead if the person serving cannot be trained on milk. If you are unsure which side of that line your site falls, tell us what you serve in your busiest hour and we will point you at the right size rather than the biggest one.
